Northampton

Leave the World Behind

Northampton enters the story as a place the adults may need to reach for medical help, but not as a destination they manage to reach. Its distance and unfamiliar roads turn the proposed trip into a test of how much can be planned when communication and reliable information are failing.

A Distant Route

As the adults discuss getting care for Archie, G. H. (George Washington) admits that he does not know the roads to Northampton and stresses that it is far. He can offer no confident directions; instead, he trails off while hoping the phones will work. Northampton is therefore presented through uncertainty rather than description: the text supplies neither a route nor a precise travel time, only the practical obstacle of distance and the hope of recovering contact.

The Medical Journey Under Consideration

Amanda insists that Archie needs a doctor and says she will take him the following morning. Her decision makes the possibility of travel urgent, while G. H.'s lack of road knowledge and reliance on the phones expose how little the group can count on. The passage does not establish that Northampton is the doctor's location or that the family sets out for it; it identifies the town as a far-off place whose roads G. H. wishes he knew as they consider what to do.

Contrast with Nearby Travel

Earlier, Ruth estimates that the journey to town and back would take at least half an hour, perhaps forty minutes if the driver does not know the way. That calculation concerns a nearer trip, not Northampton, which G. H. explicitly calls far. The contrast gives the proposed medical journey a wider scale: even a short local drive is difficult to judge, while the route to Northampton remains more remote and dependent on uncertain phone service.
